Director, Major Gifts

Position Responsibilities

The Director, Major Gifts position will be responsible for working closely with STS’ chapter Executive Directors located in Boston, Washington DC, St. Louis, Chicago and Baltimore to help create fundraising strategies for each marketplace. In addition to managing fundraising strategies in the field offices,  the Director, Major Gifts will  build and manage their own portfolio of 75 donors. This will include major individual donors, corporations and foundations. He/she will provide fundraising support to the field staff, meeting regularly with colleagues across the country. The Director will coordinate and execute fundraising strategies using experience and knowledge to build consensus and align fundraising initiatives at a regional level with national fundraising initiatives.

Additional responsibilities include:

  • identifying, cultivating, soliciting and managing a portfolio of 75 donors.
  • working collaboratively with field staff to create and implement fundraising strategies for a portfolio of donors managed in conjunction with the field staff.
  • developing multi-year fundraising strategies and goals.
  • setting and meeting financial fundraising goals.
  • creating opportunities for donor recognition and growth.
  • playing an integral role in the development of donor strategies.
  • working with SVP of Development to define and implement short and long range fundraising objectives of the organization.

Requisite Candidate Skills, Qualifications & Experience

The ideal candidate for this position will be highly entrepreneurial, flexible and not intimidated to meet with new potential donors. They should be a creative person who will help develop and implement innovative strategies that engage donors. He/she should possess a minimum of 5-7 years as a generalist development professional working with donors giving $10,000 or more per year. A Bachelors degree or equivalent combination of education and experience strongly preferred. The position does require sporadically working long hours and/or weekends and overnight travel is required.
