Let Us Introduce Ourselves

Maybe you can relate: Both Kate and I view cheesecake as a guilty pleasure. We both wonder if errands can count toward our 30-60 minutes of daily exercise. We do have our differences: Kate would rather heat up mac and cheese than make a real meal, while I would love 30 minutes of Q&A with Rachael Ray. But in the end, we realize that we have more in common than what meets the eye.

  • We've both tried biking to work. Kat found out the hard way that bikes can't be brought on the metro at rush hour and had to bike 8 miles to get home, while I discovered the hill downtown looks (and feels) a lot bigger from a 5 foot bike than a 5 foot car.
  • We both are learning to love broccoli.
  • We're both working on making time to be active — even with busy schedules.
  • We are our biggest critics.

We know that women try to do so much with just two hands and often carry the weight of the world on our shoulders. We give, even when we have nothing left to give. We smile when sometimes, we just need a good cry. We love, but sometimes we forget the one person who needs some love... ourselves.

When no one is there, it's our sisters, the women in our lives, who matter. It's their stories we carry with us, their laughter we remember, and their tears we wash away. Stories. It just seems fitting, comfortable, and welcoming. Kate and I invite you to join us in recapping the stories of our lives as we work to re-define what women's health truly encompasses — health of mind, body and heart.

On our journey, here is what you can expect from us:

  • Tip Talk: We take Sister to Sister's daily tips, and dive into detail about our experiences trying to adopting these healthful habits.
  • Inspiring Stories: No matter one's age, we all need role models. This series will highlight women within Sister to Sister's online community who are working their way towards healthy living by sharing their story.

Other types of content will be included as this blog continues to expand and grow. We need you — both your help and willingness to share your own story, in the comments and in the forums, will help shape our conversation and our journey together.

Heart to Heart,
Kate and Alex

An Investment Banker was at the pier of a small coastal Indian village when a small boat with just one fisherman docked. Inside the small boat were several large yellow fin tuna. The Investment Banker complimented the Fisherman on the quality of his fish and asked, “How long does it take to catch them?” The Fisherman replied: “Only a little while.” Continuous Read More ... Greetings, I just stumbled on

Greetings, I just stumbled on this website. I am 55 year old single woman, who very unexpectedly had a heart attack 3 weeks ago. I have normal cholesterol, low bp, eat a heart healthy diet (have been a lifetime member of WW for over 20 years), and walk 3 miles a day(till the heart attack). I have had recent occurrences of stomach/chest burning that I attributed to GI issues that I've also had. So you can imagine how shocked I was when I went to my pcp and she had me go via ambulance to the hospital. Next day I was in the cath lab and had a stent put in an artery that was 99% blocked - another artery was 40% blocked and so am on medication now - cholesterol, bp meds, and of course, Plavix and aspirin. Now when I have stomach burning I can't tell if it's GI or cardiac. I'm having some GI tests so hopefully that will help but the whole incident has been hard to believe. Everyone I know says they can't believe it happened to me, who always did everything right. Some say I should go out and eat a dozen donuts and just enjoy life (ha! Ya, like that would help anything!).... I'm looking at some cardiac rehab programs as I think monitored exercise and stress management techniques may be helpful. I'm thinking that anyone else like me needs to look at their life and see what changes they can make to maximize their chances to live a long, healthy life (without recurrence of heart problems)! Am interested to hear from others in similar situation.

Happy to have found this

Happy to have found this site. After having gone to my reg doc because I just hadn't gotten the bounce back after another grueling tax season I was sent for a stress test. The results showed that I had had a heart attack ...sometime in the past - no idea when. I had to take the first cardiologist available in order to get a cath pronto. Turns out no stent/bypass necessary as my heart had bypassed itself and my nasty little 100% occluded right coronary artery. Freaky considering, like many women, I can't even identify an incident...too busy being Mom, Wife, Business Lady. So there you go. Am kicking my cardiologist to the curb as he had not even reviewed the results of the cath by our follow-up visit. No advice on exercise except "do as much as you can". Well duh Einstein. No handouts on food, habits anything. It is insane that I am doing my own research but then again I would not have found Sister to Sister otherwise - certainly he would not have told me anything. Am looking for a new cardiologist and have cancelled my next visit ( what a joke) with the old guy.

Although the news of having a

Although the news of having a heart attack was probably very shocking and frightening to you, it is great that you went to the doctor and were tested to see what was going on with your body. Now you have the knowledge of what happened so you can move forward and do what you need to do to take care of yourself. And good for you on finding a new cardiologist. If he's not providing support, education and serving as a heatlh advocate for you, then you can find someone better. So glad that you found Sister to Sister and hope that you find a doctor that guides you on a road to heart-health. Good luck and keep us posted!

Hello everyone. I entered

Hello everyone. I entered this site while searching for upcoming health fairs in Dallas, TX. I come from a family with a history of heart issues. Both maternal grandparents died from a heart attack, my aunt has heart problems, and my 2 year old daughter has an AV canal. I don't have any heart problems, but I do have diabetes. After several episodes of being in the hospital, passing out, constantly being sick, and my daughter being affected by my diabetes, I decided that I had to make a change in my life in order to improve my health. Recently, I was introduced to Ardyss International. This company has a host of natural health products that is sweeping the country. Their featured product is a drink called La Vive. This drink has all 5 major antioxidants in it, which are noni, acai berry, goji, magosteen, and pomegranate. It has no sugars or additives. Since I have been drinking this juice my sugar levels have been normal, and I have more energy. Even though no medical claims can be made by the company, people have said that this product has lowered their blood pressure and cholesterol. I even heard a cancer patient say that this drink gives her enough energy to drive herself to and from her chemotherapy sessions. Ardyss also features a host of natural weightloss garments, not only for women, but for men as well. After trying the products for about a month, I decided to get into the company and start my own business featuring the these products. This company has truly changed peoples lives both physically and financially. I for one can say that it has certainly changed mine. Not only is my family living a more healthy lifestyle, we are also living a life of financial freedom. Being a part of this company has taken us to heights I could have never reached working the average job. To anyone who takes great pleasure in making the world a healthier place, post me and we can discuss how you to can make a positive difference in someone's life.

Greetings. I am new to sister

Greetings. I am new to sister to sister and just starting to navigate the site. I have a particular interest in being heart healthy. I have worked in health care for 15 years and have recently completed my masters in mental health counseling. I see on a daily basis how stress, lack of exercise and eating an unbalanced diet can take its toll...especially on women who have so many roles to juggle. I look forward to being more active on the site and hearing from many of you so that I can better serve those I work with and..myself. Thank you all for your shared stories and priceless words of wisdom.

It's funny how things happen.

It's funny how things happen. I happen to stumble on this sight by accident. I have been touched by heart disease. My father passed away on Mother's Day, May 10, 2009 of a heart attack. He was only 67. I just wish there was more of a push on all the symptoms of a heart attack. He never had any chest pains or pain in his left arm or any of the other "commom" symptoms everyone preaches about. The only symptom he had was feeling sick, like he was still drunk from the night before or a really bad hangover. Even in the ER, the nurses and doctors asked him if he was in any pain. He said no, which is good to know he didn't die in pain. Everyone I have met that has known someone that has had a heart attack have all said the same thing, they also did not have chest pains, only the sick to the stomach feeling. Please, I ask everyone to learn all the symptoms of a heart attack. Just don't rely on the common symptoms. It could just save your or someone you love life.

Dear Skohsmom: I hope you are

Dear Skohsmom: I hope you are feeling better today. Yes, that must have been a tredemdous scare. Since you are an RN, I'm sure you know what you need to do from here on, physically. But again, feel free to post. We're all here to listen (read) because there are many of us in the same boat and it brings comfort knowing others share the same struggle. Praying for you!

That is scarier than scary.

That is scarier than scary. It hasn't happened to me, but I did see a friend through a similar experience. My advice: Tell the people in your life how scared you are (don't keep it to yourself!). It's amazing how many people will come out and help you if only they know you'd let them.

Dear skohsmom, What a scare!

Dear skohsmom,

What a scare! But it's great news that they caught this, and that you can control it with meds and lifestyle changes. Since you're an RN, it sounds like you know what you need to do now, but our resources on lifestyle changes that might help you out too (particularly the ones in Healthy Living).

Have you talked with your family about the lifestyle changes you'll have to make? Having support from family and friends can go a long way, and the more they understand, the more they may be able to help.

Heart to Heart,
Kate
