Tip Talk: Saying No to Soda

Alex's picture

From our Daily Tips: "Hands off the soda, especially diet soda."

Okay, let’s not fool ourselves. Drinking soda in general isn’t the best thing for your health, but neither is drinking diet soda. In fact, according to some, drinking diet soda is even more hazardous to your health than regular soda.

In 2005, a study conducted by Sharon P. Fowler, MPH, and colleagues at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio found that drinkers of diet soda did not lose weight. In fact, they were 41% more likely to gain weight that those who drank regular soda — and they had an increased risk of obesity!

Research also indicates that drinking soda and diet soda increases cravings, which in the end, increases overall calorie intake. However, the main reason to steer clear of soda, besides the caffeine, high acidity, calories and increased craving sensation, is that it contains both sugar and high-fructose corn syrup – both damaging to one's health.

I'm fortunate in that I don't drink diet soda or any soda for that matter. I say fortunate because I know it's hard to stop something cold turkey as I have the biggest sweet tooth ever, and no matter what I try, my hand always seems to find some sugar. But, that is another story for another day.

Bonus Tip: If you're determined to steer clear of sodas but don't want to waste the ones you've already bought, you can still put your beverages to use by cleaning! Soda can work as a great cleaning agent for your toilet, eliminate rust from your car bumpers, and remove grease from your clothing. Plus, think of the added benefit of the exercise gained from cleaning.

Your Turn: The soda issue is constantly being debated from people on both sides, asking just how bad it is. How do you feel about soda?

keep it away from children

My mother never let my brother and I have soda as children so we never developed a taste for it, and I rarely drink it as an adult. I don't crave it or find it appealing. I would never give my child soda because I don't want him to develop this bad habit.

I agree that Drinking soda in

I agree that Drinking soda in general isn’t the best thing for your health, but some of health drinks or soda drinks are proved good for health as they do not contain large amount of sugar or artificial sweetener. A drink contain 0% sugar is not so harmful as drinking soda in general. These drinks may contain Agave as sweetener beside sugar or any artificial sweetener.

Try POM Concentrate and seltzer

I was at a spa recently and the Chef was giving a talk - he said he loved to drink soda and eat chips at night, and the way he kicked the habit was he started mixing POM concentrate (not pomegranate juice, but the concentrate - it's hard to find, but it's in most health food stores) with seltzer water and he said it really worked. He said he thought it was b/c of the syrupy nature of the POM concentrate. Also, he makes flax crackers and eats those instead of chips!

But I NEED the caffeine

I go in spurts -- I go cold turkey and can stay away compeletely. But the minute I take a sip of soda, I'm back to craving it. Sparkling seltzer doesn't do it for me. Are there any other drinks you can suggest? I'd LOVE to kick this habit and I agree my heart would be thankful.

Diet Soda

My sister quit a terrible diet soda habit by switching to sparkling water with a fresh squeezed lemon.

ice tea substitute

I used to drink Diet Coke but kicked the habit when I got an iced tea maker (I use caffeine-free teabags).

iced tea maker

Wow, I'd never heard of an iced tea maker before - I always had to make hot tea and then chill it! What a good idea. That sounds like a great substitute to me. :)

I had success with citrus flavored sparkling waters, you should try it out.

I used to drink soda all day

I used to drink soda all day long, but weaned myself over time. I started off drinking half caffeine, half caffeine free, and then finally when I was off the caffeine I switched over to lemon/lime seltzer water. Ultimately I find water so much thirst quenching and realized that I was just drinking the soda for something to do, not because I was thirsty.

I had the same problem with

I had the same problem with soda until I stoped for one week and lost alot of water weight. I started with going to diet drinks, then only clear sodas and now I hardly ever drink. I also started working out which made me more thirsty for water.

I believe that the best way

I believe that the best way to protect our children from soda is to never give it to them in the first place, so that they don’t develop a taste for it. According to “Liquid Candy” one-fifth of one and two year old in America drink soda—I don’t see any way to rationalize that.
