Avoid Taking Steroid Medications if Possible

Steroids, commonly used to treat asthma and multiple sclerosis, alter the potassium balance in your heart muscle cells, which can increase your risk of heart disease by raising your blood pressure, glucose, and lipids. One British study found that people using steroids had a two-and-a-half times greater risk for cardiovascular disease. If you must take steroids for another condition, speak to your doctor about how it might affect your heart disease risk.
