Carbs, or carbohydrates, have taken a lot of heat lately so don’t be confused: They are important for your diet. “Good” carbs are complex carbohydrates. They have more fiber, take longer to break down into glucose (blood sugar), and are packed with vitamins and minerals. “Bad” carbs—which are usually found in white bread, chips, pretzels, cakes, and cookies—are made with refined carbohydrates such as white flour and added sugars. The majority of carbohydrates in your diet should be of the complex, or “good,” variety, including fruits, vegetables, and foods made with whole grains.
