A diet that includes moderate levels of healthy lean proteins, like skinless chicken, nuts and dairy may be better for your heart than a high carbohydrate diet. A recent study published in the Journal of Nutrition found that of 130 overweight adults, those who followed a diet where 30 percent of calories came from protein, 40 percent from carbohydrates and 30 percent of fat versus those who ate 15 percent protein, 55 percent carbohydrates and 30 percent from fat, lost similar amounts of weight. But those who ate more lean protein had better HDL (good) cholesterol levels and lower triglycerides. Researchers theorize that the improvement is because lean protein supports healthy muscle mass.
