We know that eating nuts can reduce your reduce your cholesterol but researchers wanted to know if there are other heart healthy benefits of eating nuts as well. In a study of middle-aged men and women with hyperlipemia (high levels of lipid in the bloodstream), researchers found that those who ate about 2/3 cup of almonds daily had lower levels of lipid oxidation. In the body, oxidized lipids can lead to cardiovascular disease. The findings support current recommendations to consume small amounts of nuts as part of a heart healthy diet.
