Don't Be Afraid to Eat Fat

It’s good to have a little fat in your diet. In fact, about 20 to 35 percent of your total calories should come from fat. Just keep in mind that not all fats are created equal. Try to choose “good” fats—polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats—that can help lower your risk of heart disease by reducing your cholesterol. Sources include nuts, plant-based oils (olive, canola, and safflower), avocados, flaxseed, and fish including salmon, trout, herring, and sardines.

Many people, especially teenage girls, think that eating fat is what that makes them fat. Nothing could be further from the truth. The main reason why people are so fat is because of the heavy consumption of carbohydrates where the unassimilated carbs turn to fat. Incorporating fat at a percentage of twenty is actually essential. Only thing is to make sure the fats are healthy. Some healthy fats are olive oil, peanut butter and so on!

I try to follow a Mediterranean diet... whole grains, veggies, fruit, seafood, poultry, olive oil and nuts while reducing my intake of red meat, butter and refined sugars. It can be very challenging at times but I think that the less food we eat from a bag or a box, the better our health will be. Just try to keep it natural, whole and simple.
