Are You At Risk?

The first step is finding out if you have risk factors for heart disease. Take this quiz to find out.

  1. Do you smoke?
    no
  2. Is your blood pressure 140/90 mmHg or higher, or did a health professional tell you that your blood pressure is high?
    no
  3. Did a health professional tell you that your LDL ("bad") cholesterol is too high, your total cholesterol level is 200 mg/dL or higher, or your HDL ("good") cholesterol is less than 40 mg/dL?
    no
  4. Has your father or brother had a heart attack before age 55? Has your mother or sister had a heart attack before age 65?
    no
  5. Do you have diabetes?
    no
  6. Are you over 55 years old?
    no
  7. Do you have a body mass index (BMI) of 25 or more?
    no
(Don't know how to calculate your BMI? Go to this calculator on the NHLBI Web site.)
  8. Do you get less than 30 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity on most days?
    no
  9. Has a doctor told you that you have angina (chest pains), or have you had a heart attack?
    no

If you answered YES to any of these questions, you are at an increased risk of having a heart attack. If you don't know the answers to any of these questions, ask your doctor for help answering them.
