Not All Margarines Are Created Equal

With so many margarine products available, it’s hard to know what to choose for your heart health. Choose margarine over butter because butter is loaded with fat. Choose tub or liquid margarine over the stick form. Look for “light” margarines that list water as the first ingredient and have no trans-fat. Spray margarine and butter substitutes can also be a good choice. If you have high cholesterol, talk with your doctor about using margarines made from plant sterols or stanols, which can lower your LDL (“bad”) cholesterol. Finally, canola and olive oil both make healthier margarine substitutes.
